A recent study reveals that the AI job market in the UK has been expanding at a faster rate than in the US over the past five years.
Examining data from job listings, the research conducted by AIPRM found that between 2017 and 2022, the average annual growth rate for AI recruitment was 1.2% in the US, compared to 1.22% in the UK during the same period.
The strong performance of the UK has outpaced other major economies such as India (1.19% growth), Canada (1.26%), and Brazil (1.21%).
“Despite the continuous expansion of the AI job market in the US, the growth rate slightly trailed behind countries like the UK,” stated John Smith, the lead author of the report.
In addition to analyzing hiring patterns, the report also identified the highest-paying and most sought-after AI positions in the US. The top-ranking role is Director of Data Science, with an average salary of £200,263.
AI Architects claimed the second spot, with an average annual salary of around £197,431. The technical skills required for this position include architecture, AWS, business intelligence, and DataOps.
Several other roles in data science and machine learning offer median average salaries exceeding £150,000.
California was highlighted as a significant AI hub, representing over a quarter (27%) of listings across the entire US, which is more than double the next highest state, New York, at 13%.
Discussing the factors driving the positive growth forecasts, Smith mentioned, “Rapid advancements in AI technology have unlocked exciting new possibilities for businesses in various sectors. As companies seek to leverage areas like computer vision and natural language processing, the demand for skilled AI professionals is expected to continue rising.”
However, Smith also cautioned about potential challenges arising from the ongoing debate surrounding AI regulation.
“Policymakers still need to find the right balance between innovation and ethics. Achieving this balance will support the continued growth of the AI job market,” Smith concluded.
