AI has quickly evolved from a theoretical concept to a powerful force that is reshaping industries and societies globally. As businesses and organizations increasingly realize the potential of AI to drive innovation, optimize processes, and unlock new opportunities, a new generation of leaders has emerged to navigate this uncharted territory.
Mustafa Suleyman has built an impressive career as an entrepreneur, technologist, and AI leader. Growing up in north London, his journey began at the University of Oxford’s Mansfield College, where he left at 19 to co-found the Muslim Youth Helpline, a telephone counseling service that has grown to become one of the UK’s largest support services for Muslims.
Driven by a desire to make a positive impact, Suleyman worked with a diverse range of clients, including the United Nations, the Dutch government, and the World Wide Fund for Nature, during his time at Reos Partners. This wide-ranging experience set the stage for his future endeavors in the AI field.
In 2010, Suleyman co-founded DeepMind, a highly acclaimed AI and machine learning company, with Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg. As DeepMind’s Chief Product Officer, he played a crucial role in establishing the company as a leading player in the technology industry, leading to its acquisition by Google in 2014.
Following the acquisition, Suleyman took on the role of Head of Applied AI at DeepMind, overseeing the integration of the company’s technology into Google’s products. This work included collaborations with various partners, such as healthcare organizations like the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) for research projects and advancements in Google’s data center cooling initiatives.
Recognizing the importance of ethics in AI development, Suleyman was instrumental in establishing DeepMind Ethics & Society, a unit dedicated to studying the real-world impacts of AI. This initiative underscored his dedication to responsible AI practices.
After leaving Google in 2022, Suleyman co-founded Inflection, a technology company focused on developing machine learning and generative AI (Gen AI) hardware and applications. In May 2023, Inflection introduced Pi, a personalized intelligence AI platform designed to provide natural, flowing conversations, friendly advice, and concise information.
Suleyman envisioned Pi as “a new kind of AI, one that isn’t just smart but also has good EQ.” He saw Pi as a digital companion that could help users learn, provide feedback, and offer an engaging conversational experience.
In addition to his entrepreneurial pursuits, Suleyman has been a prominent figure in the AI ethics community, advocating for collaboration between companies and governments to ensure responsible AI technology development. He co-chairs the Partnership on AI, an organization that includes tech giants like Amazon, Apple, DeepMind, Meta, Google, IBM, and Microsoft, with the goal of promoting public understanding of AI and encouraging best practices.
Suleyman’s achievements and leadership in the AI field have established him as a trailblazer. His recent appointment as CEO of Microsoft AI represents a significant milestone in his career. In this role, he leads Microsoft’s new consumer AI unit, overseeing research and product development areas, including Copilot, Bing, and Edge.
With his extensive experience, vision, and commitment to ethical AI development, Mustafa Suleyman is well-positioned to shape the future of consumer AI at Microsoft, leveraging his expertise to drive innovation while maintaining responsible practices in this rapidly evolving field.
“It’s been an amazing journey, with so much more to come,” he said.
