According to research from PSA Certified, the industry is struggling to keep up with the rapid growth of AI in terms of security measures and best practices.
A survey of 1,260 global technology decision-makers found that 68% are concerned that AI advancements are outpacing the industry’s ability to secure products, devices, and services. This concern is leading to increased adoption of edge computing, with 85% believing that security issues will drive more AI use cases to the edge.
Edge computing, which processes data locally on devices rather than relying on centralized cloud systems, offers advantages in efficiency, security, and privacy. However, this shift to the edge requires a greater focus on device security.
David Maidment, Senior Director, Market Strategy at Arm (a co-founder of PSA Certified), emphasizes the importance of the relationship between AI and security, stating that one cannot scale without the other.
Despite recognizing security as crucial, there is a gap between awareness and action. Only 50% of respondents believe their current security investments are sufficient, and essential security practices are being neglected by many.
A holistic approach to security, embedded throughout the AI lifecycle, is essential to building consumer trust and mitigating security risks. This proactive approach, incorporating security-by-design principles, is crucial in addressing the escalating security threats.
While concerns exist, there is optimism within the industry, with 67% of decision-makers believing their organizations are equipped to handle security risks associated with AI’s growth. There is a growing recognition of the need to prioritize security investment over AI readiness.
It is crucial for stakeholders in the connected device ecosystem to take the necessary steps to mitigate security risks associated with AI. As AI-enabled use cases expand, security implications must not be overlooked.
