An artificial intelligence tool has demonstrated its ability to detect signs of cancer that were missed by human radiologists.
The AI tool, known as Mia, was tested in collaboration with NHS clinicians in the UK and analyzed the mammograms of over 10,000 women.
Although most of the participants did not have cancer, the AI successfully identified all those with symptoms of breast cancer, as well as an additional 11 cases that had been overlooked by the doctors. Out of the 10,889 women involved in the study, only 81 opted not to have their scans reviewed by the AI system.
The AI tool was trained on a dataset of more than 6,000 previous breast cancer cases to recognize the subtle patterns and imaging biomarkers associated with malignant tumors. When tested on new cases, it accurately predicted the presence of cancer with an 81.6 percent accuracy rate and ruled it out correctly 72.9 percent of the time.
Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women globally, with two million new cases diagnosed each year. While survival rates have improved due to earlier detection and enhanced treatments, many patients still suffer from severe side effects such as lymphoedema following surgery and radiotherapy.
Researchers are now enhancing the AI system to forecast a patient’s risk of such side effects up to three years after treatment. This could enable doctors to tailor care with alternative treatments or additional supportive measures for high-risk patients.
The research team intends to enroll 780 breast cancer patients in a clinical trial named Pre-Act to validate the AI risk prediction model prospectively over a two-year follow-up period. The ultimate objective is to develop an AI system that can comprehensively assess a patient’s prognosis and treatment requirements.
